Default Re: Apdatec 39160?

1) Does the ATTO card work in older Macs (9600, PowerTower Pro)

Yes.

2) Is the Ultra160 dual channel ATTO card (the latest one) approved?

It's in test.

3) I've seen several G4's with ATTO cards that refuse to boot if hard drives with older FWB drivers are placed on the SCSI chain. The ATTO card seems really touchy about this. Polaris mentions running current firmware on hard drives - so my question is: Is the ATTO card picky about hard drive firmware, or just picky about the software driver placed on the hard drive by the formatting software?

The only FWB/ATTO incompatibilty I'm aware of was an FWB bug that conflicted with ATTO firmware 1.2 or greater. This FWB bug was fixed in version 3.0, I believe.

4) If I put LVD and/or Ultra160 drives on an Adaptec 3940U2W, what will happen? Should it work?

Well, first off there is no "3940U2W." The 3940UW is a single-ended, dual-channel card. Perhaps you mean the 2940U2W, which is single-channel, LVD card. Nevertheless, SCSI is backwards compatible, so the drives should work on either card. You will be limited by the weakest link in the chain between the card and the drives. Example: A 160 drive on the 3940UW will only be able to operate as a single-ended device with a maximum burst rate of 40MB/sec. It will also be limited to the allowable cable lengths of single-ended SCSI. On a 2940U2W, the drive will be limited to a maximum burst rate of 80MB/sec, but the cable length will be the same as a 160 card -- 12 meters total -- since both are LVD.

Polaris,
"The only problem I've encountered is the two inits at bootup with more than one drive connected which I believe to be a problem even with the ATTO"

Yes - this was also a problem for the ATTO, but it was solved simply by upgrading to 5.0.1. With 5.0, the explanation was too many USB Devices & Drives - unbelievable.
