Default Digi002 vs MBox...

Although I've used ProTools in many studios (mostly the HD systems) I'm new to having one myself. Right now I'm running the MBox2 with LE - simple home studio setup.

What would the overall advantages be to upgrading to an 002 rack over the MBox. Is there any difference in I/O signal quality, recording features, or general user friendliness?

The only substantial sonic advantage of the 002R is the power supply. The Mbox2 is cleaner than the original Mbox, but a switching supply on a 5V source is still generally a little dirtier than a traditional supply from 120V AC. The power supply affects everything, the converters, preamps, outputs, etc, but the difference in this case isn't a whole lot. The main difference is you get lots more i/o, Firewire connectivity for lower latency, and most importantly the ability to multitrack using high-end external preamps and converters.

However, if you're not recording more than 4 tracks at once very often, you should find someone who will rent you a 002R when you need one. All you have to do is install the 002R drivers and you can swap at will.

For me, Low Latency mode is almost worht the price of admission. Plus, you can easily add outboard preamps and converters to expand and improve audio quality.
