Default FatSo Vs Crane song Hedd......

Have anyone try the Empirial Lab's FatSo yet. I was original hoping to get some kind of processor to warmup my Protools tracks. HEDD, at the time, seemed pretty good, and it keeps the audio in digital domain. I could also use it as an A/D. But the FatSo, seemed to be more flexibile, in terms of choosing and adjusting the "distortion".....and it has a compressor too. Since, they are in the same price range, what would you guys/gals choose?

Besides I was looking for a Pre of which has DI in as well......so I can track my Synth as well. I Know the Avalon 737 is very good, but is mono. But Avalon has released a New Stereo pre w/ DI. Anyone had a try with it? Anyone had a chance using the Penedulum Audio's Stereo pre which also has DI? How does it Perform? (Avalon vs Penedulum???-both Class a tube Device)

I haven't heard the Fastso yet, but all the boxes you are talking about have quite a different sound, and would be good for different things--you may need to listen to them all to make up your mind. The Avalons have such a sweet, detailed sound, but not as agressive or fat as distressor. Can you hire any of these before you buy?

It's the Avalon AD2022 which is no more or no less than an upgrade of their M5 mono pre line with aditional features ....... several mic impedances, -3 / +3db output trim, Balanced and Unbalanced outs ......

Oh yes,....... the AD2022 or the M5 pre's sound NO WHERE NEAR to the 737 ...... they bothe carry the same name "Avalon" and that's about it if you ask me. Try it ...... put an M5 / AD2022 pre and compare it with the 737 with the eq / dynamics in BYPASS, ....

the 737 doesn't even come close to the AD2022 / M5 quality. It's like comparing the eq section of a behringer with the Manley Massive Passive , ....... and NO I'm not kidding. Avalon is about the best you can get if you want to go "dedicated" pre only , or eq only , or dynamics only ......... forget their all in one combination boxes, and for that matter most other brands of all in one combo's channel in a boxes etc etc .....

The only realy satisfying one I've heard (and I tested a lot of them) is the Focusrite ISA43..... something ......

Empirial Lab's FatSo & HEDD,
Since, they are in the same price range, what would you guys/gals choose?

- The Hedd, it will also become your main converter FOR EVERYTHING as it sounds so superior...if you only ever record stuff 2 track at a time, you could skip an 888/24 and just get a 1620, old 888/16 or an ADAT bridge and save yourself $2K by feeding them the Hedd via 24 bit AES or SPDIF. slap it on your main output & get a juicy fat 1/2" simulation.

Recording + Mixing

Not heard the Fatso yet, but if they are anywhere in the same league as my Distressors, they will be killer.
I often use those to warm up the sound: Dist3 (tape saturation) and 1:1 ratio (no compression) straight into the A/D converters. Nice...

Cheers
