Default PT 9 won't play or record!

Just started working with PT 9. When I start a new session, I can't record or play (most of the time). I searched for answers and found that some people reset or change their buffer in the playback engine. This works, but only once. Each time I want to play or record, I have to go in and reset the buffer. Anyone have a solution? Thanks
