Default PT11 session over VPN

I just have to share this as it is so incredible it even works....

I have VPN access to our studio facilities. The internet upload speed there is from 35-50Mb and my download speed at home is constantly above 100Mb, so I'm theoretically within "the building" on 100Mb when I connect from home.

I had a wild hair this morning to try mounting my audio drives from my work control room to my iMac at home over VPN to see if I could run a PT11 session. I didn't copy ANYTHING to my local drives, but simply mounted the drives from my remote system. Again, this is over the INTERNET using VPN.

I opened a session just as if I were sitting in my control room... files and waveforms were IMMEDIATELY available at home. I hit PLAY and it played on my iMac. I thought I'd try doing a high-speed offline bounce and, believe it or not, I could bounce a 26:00 minute radio program in less than :30 seconds... all with remote drives mounted via VPN.

Plugins consisted of Waves Diamond, obviously installed on both systems and using the new AAX 9.2 plugin. Not a real heavy music session, but did consist of multiple music and announcer tracks, not to mention multiple bussing to specific stems.

As far as I could tell, the system reposonded just as if I were sitting at my workstation in my control room.

How great is this??!! Now I can work from home on my day off when I have to get stuff done without the hours to do it!

Now try mounting the Protools hardware at the studio from your home system and se if you can run the session from your home laptop while using the interface at the studio and the storage system also at the studio.

If you can, you won'e ever have to go back into work again.

Question Re: PT11 session over VPN

Are you using Pro Tools|HD with the Disk Cache set to something other than Normal?

Even though the studios are either HD-Native or HDX2, I'm on an iMac at home, which doesn't have the disk cache setting.

Again, with the up/down speeds I have over the internet, the system responds as if I were hanging off a 100Mb network in the studios. Because of the VPN connection, that's virtually how it's working.

I've heard that PT has troubles with loading projects on network drives... Although the problems I heard about may have involved using a non-admin account.

That sounds cool, but I hope you're backing everything up.

Backup... yup! All systems at the studios are backed up nightly to LTO.
