Default PT 2019 Mojave performance improvements

Okay, so this is even worse than Apple's marketing.

http://www.avidblogs.com/pro-tools-2...-improvements/

Can anyone decipher what is the baseline configuration?

I set up a test with 192 stereo audio tracks (384 voices) with Avid Channel strip, MoogerFooger delay, D-verb, Reel tape and I am not seeing any improvements in CPU performance, It is slightly worse on Mojave in fact. About 10% cpu increase inside PT cpu meter.

This is on dual 3,46 Xeon 5,1 Cheese grater with 64GB of ram.

Compared Mojave to Sierra 10.12.6 and Sierra always wins. Of course there are benefits of smaller buffer size, lower latency. But you do not need Mojave for that, Sierra works with lower latency also - which does not raise CPU usage like in 2018.12 when lowering the buffer.

Does anyone with newer processors see a significant performance boost tied to Mojave? I cannot find any on my system.

I haven't experienced any performance boosts on Mojave going from Pro Tools 12.6 to Pro Tools 2019.5. Seems about the same for me...YMMV.

Oh, I am sure the performance optimizations are there. It's just i cannot find a proof that they are tied to Mojave. Reaper does not need Mojave for good performance, nor does Logic, Cubase, Studio One. I applaud Avid for the good job, just wondering if anyone had other experience, because it seems that people were either:
1) already using Mojave with 2018.12 and upgraded to 2019.5 and are touting the performance boost with Mojave
2) using High Sierra with 2018.12 and first upgraded to Mojave and are also reporting better performance. There are not many reports for older operating systems.

I cannot follow what you are doing or what exactly you are disputing that Avid said. What exactly are you comparing? At what IO buffer sizes etc.

Avid's post there is really comparing Pro Tools 2018 and 2019.5. It's not about a performance claim that PT on Mojave is faster... just that they now support Mojave.

If you are not seeing *significant* improvements with 2019.5 something is likely wrong. Do you know what exact plugins and workload etc. Avid tested with here, did you base your tests on knowing that? I expect they might ask tell you if ask them.

For most folks it seems 2019.5 is so spectacularly better than previous versions that everybody is too busy getting work done.

The way to determine what you can run is to load up some workload until it fails with AAE errors. Are you doing that? What error is setting your limit?

What PT OR Activity Monitor CPU meters show is not the key there, and (esp. with hyperthreading) they lie/are too hard for users to understand, and 2019.5 includes changes to try to get the PT CPU meters more useful so directly comparing 2018.x and earlier and 2019.5 meters may be suspect.

Darryl,

I dig the 2019.5 update, and see a massive difference for the better.

Finally, it feels like someone opened the trunk and started tweaking things.
I did some couple of days on 2019.5 with 10.12.6 already and it's mostly trouble free. I had video engine fail one time, (PT wanted to restart the engine, but i had to close/open pt) which did not happen in my workflow under 2018.12, but that may have been due to my NAS, which hosts the video files.

I am just curious if there are any _specific_ Mojave optimizations, but so far i could not find any. That is all.

Way to go Avid, and hope the next half of optimizations for HDX people will turn out as good as this one.

I just upgraded ONLy the OS from High Sierra to Mojave and it feels snappier and with fewer stops, errors and crashes. I had no crashes today at all, which is far from normal.. :)

I upgraded my 5,1 (same as yours) to 2019.5 and Mojave shortly after. The performance seems slightly better.

But on my 2018 MacBook Pro (i9, 32GB RAM) the difference is HUGE. I had been struggling with some sessions while traveling between December and April, but these sessions run with WAY less pressure on the CPU now. Memory usage is pretty high tho. I'm glad that I got the 32 GB RAM

On newer CPU, I don't know but I can squeeze my little Mac mini late 2012 i5 to 90% cpu without stops....I couldn't do this on 2018.12 PT. That's impressive.

I too updated my 2010 Mac Pro to Mojave 10.14.5 running Pro Tools Ultimate 2019.5 with HD Native. To do so, I had to replace the stock Radeon 5770 video card with a Sapphire PULSE RX 580 8G G5 card which is 12.5x faster but really doesn't matter much when it comes to Pro Tools. Honestly I think the performance in High Sierra is about the same but I'll try some more tests this weekend. For sure PT 2019.5 is improved on speed/latency/number of plugins over PT 2018.x.
