Default need more power captain

I'm lovin' my G4 400 (512 ram ) set up. However, with some waves plugins and a couple of channel strips and a couple reverbs I'm toast. Anyone know the cheapest next step up? Thanks.

Have you:
Created an extensions set specific to PT, with only the core esential extensions and control panels?

Installed a second HD dedicated to audio, with all applications on your master drive?

Allocated more memory to DAE and PT?

All these will greatly improve your performance. Hope this is helpful.

Yes I have a dedicated audio drive and have set extensions to PT minimum though I admit I keep internet extensions always on because I e-mail files regularly. Hardware buffer set 75% -disc cashe 512 ect. I print effects and subgroup and realize that is the artform when limited to PT lite. However, I love some of those cpu hog plugs like channel strip and auto-tune and third party reverbs. So on to my original question--is the next step up full blown Mix 24 system or is there something in between PT lite and $10,000?

There's nothing "in between", however a faster machine with more ram will improve your performance greatly. the 933's are smokin', and not bad rpices on them. Once summer macworld comes near they will drop draumatically.
We get great preformance out of our Dual 800 Quicksilver. See then new benchmark test post for our results.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">There's your problem. I'm pretty impressed you can even get more than one. Check into an outboard reverb unit, something you can hook up via S/PDIF. This will save you a lot of processing power.

It's kinda tough to swallow that my newest greatest G4 400 is obsolete. I know that's the nature of this beast. Can just processors be upgraded reasonably? Now that the Mix 24 crowd needs HD will mix 24 systems be going for a song soon? I've been sneaking in an outboard reverb on my drum sub but I noticed a long time ago that my productivity when up when the clutter in my studio went down. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I found someone selling a Protools|24 system with an extra DSP farm, 16bit interface, Video Capture board, ATTO Card and dual SCSI drives installed in an 8500 for £1,600. so yeah, if you shop around you could get a used Protools system for around the price of an entry level G4 give or take £100 or so. I could kick myself for seeing this advertised when I won't have anything like that money to spend until nearly christmas!!!

It does make me think that they'll be a lot more of these kinds of ads around. As people upgrade from Mix Plus systems to HD, they'll be selling their old setups, people with the Protools|24 systems will probably buy the old Mix systems and then that leaves us LE users to pick up the Protools|24 systems that are left over. works in theory anyway, I just hope I find a similar deal when I HAVE got the money.
