I think concensus states that ATTO formatting is indicated for SCSI drives if you operate the ATTO SCSI accelerator card. Adaptec and other SCSI cards call for either Apple or FWB formatting of SCSI drives. Your Pro Tools application drive would commonly be formatted with Apple or FWB, as well. I can't speak to what FWB might offer over Apple for an application drive.

I can't comment on the Standard/Extended issue.

The above suggestions were given me 6 months ago in stting up a new Mix Plus system with a G4 450MHz DP, ATTO card, and SCSI audio drives. I may lead you astray if your setup is different from this. This is really not my area.

I don't think there is a noticable difference between standard or extended format. The difference is that with extended you will save some diskspace especially if you have a lot of fades and many audio files.

I'm using a 500MHz G4 DP and had formatted my drives with the ATTO utility (I have an ATTO accelerator). I began having problems with the "Bounce to Disk" function - basically it would hang. I reformatted with FWB and have no more problems (even though Digi has recommended the ATTO formatting). Anyone else had this issue?

Avoiding bounce to disk for sonic quality reasons, I haven't had that problem, Errol.
ATTO formatting seems OK in other respects here.

What about Intech's Hard Disk Speed Tools- the guys at Mac Gurus seem to swear by it- they say it's the most compatible drive tools program they've ever tested and it has free lifetime updates, plus a lower price to start with ($40). I did some searching around here on the DUC but haven't found anything. Here's a link for info:

MacGurus usually knows their stuff! Anyone have personal exp. with this and their PT drives? I'm having some drive problems that might be remedied by new drivers so I'm interested to know.

In my experience with several generations of Digi products, I recommend going with Digi's compatibility recommendations. This may sound like rather boring advice, but unless a specific Digi recommended setup--followed to the "T"-- is causing you grief, I've always found it the best way to go.

The alternative is bleeding edge technology and unless forced into a situation, I'd rather get work done than be a Digi guiney pig. For my two cents, go with the ATTO. I've had great results with it. Maybe the guys at Mac Gurus are gurus for Mac, but Digi specific matters are something else entirely. Personally, I'd trust the recommendation of an experienced Digi dealer like Westlake Audio in LA or Sam Ash Pro in NY or Sweetwater in the midwest over Mac Guru.

Is your ATTO card setup properly; sync 20/10, burst 32? You should have no issues with bouncing with the ATTO card.

FWB makes a good product, but they have been known for beeing slow when it comes to keeping up with changes at Apple.
