192 output question
Sorry for the double post, but nobody on the Windows side has had an answer
I know the old 192 outputs require NOT connecting the cold side if you want to run unbalanced. Does anyone know about the newer HD IO outputs(I have one on the way)? I read thru the online manual and that was never addressed. My headphone amp uses unbalanced inputs and I am hoping to not have to build special cables __________________

Re: 192 output question
It should be the same.
We´re using HD I/O -10 inputs with only hot and ground fed from MAC´s minijack outs for computer audio monitoring inside PT. Presumably it should work the same for the outputs, just give it a try when you get the unit. However, I´m always in favour of using a proper active de-balancing unit for proper impedance matching.

Re: 192 output question
Hello,
The 192 and all the Avid interfaces have active differential inputs and outputs, not servo-balanced. This means the outputs should not be shorted. So driving an unbalanced input from the in-polarity and shield (pins 2+1) is the ideal method. Paulo - ideally the inputs should be driven on both pins 2 and 3. If only one signal pin is driven as you note, theoretically it's slightly noisier due to the floating input pin. With modern input circuitry and the output driving it you probably won't notice. Re: 192 output question
Float the cold for unbalanced signal inputs, also.

Re: 192 output question
With the HD IO in hand, the manual does say(regarding unbalanced INPUTS) to NOT connect the cold pin, so I will treat outputs the same. I am actually cheating my way around the wiring issue by using the ADAT output to my Focusrite OctoPre Mk II Dynamic's D>A. That unit doesn't care if the outputs(quarter inch TRS) are run balanced or unbalanced. A simple 4-channel insert snake gives me 4 stereo pairs to the headphone amp. The 5th is balanced into the headphone amp's MAIN inputs(which ARE balanced). I got my 5 independent stereo HP mixes(5 is as many people as I can fit in my humble little studio).
