Default Loopback setup

I'm trying to measure some equipment with a freq sweep, but I'm having problems with feedback on the mbox 3. Can someone tell how to shut off monitoring with this unit so I can use the loopback setup? Thanks

If it's actually the Mbox and not the mini, you have to use the Mbox driver control applet. Look in the control panel.

Thanks James. It's the normal MBOX3...not the mini or the pro.

I'm not sure how to decipher what my monitoring is. There's no option per say called monitoring in the control setup? In my control panel I have my hardware inputs and the master output.

Would the monitoring be the software returns?

If you are only using the analog outs, then on the analog out tab, make sure that only the analog out software returns are up and all others are turned all the way down.

Hey Jim

I don't have an analog outputs tab. This is what I have...

You do have an analog output tab. Close the setup and it's the tab that's in orange. Make sure only software return 1-2 are up and the hardware inputs are completely off. If this is correct, then the only other place you could be getting feedback in the loopback is in the Pro Tools session routing.

Thanks Jimmy. I'm at my wits end with this thing...it's giving me a headache. Unhappy MBOX user here. I'm not using protools, I'm attempting to use it with REW in order to measure some gear (frequency sweep)....out of MBOX into Neve preamp...out of neve preamp back into MBOX....REW sends a sweep signal out of MBOX into Neve and back again....in order to measure the Neve freq response. I'm not sure why you refer to the Analog 1/2 as my analog outputs. I think of these as my inputs (they're called hardware inputs on the panel)...software return's...i have no idea what that even means. Software returns?...from where?

From the hardware inputs into my DAW of choice?

It's funny how many other guys with different interfaces seem to have no problem with feedback with this type of loopback connection. It's the same thing as if I wanted to measure the freq response of the MBOX itself...I can't because there's all this feedback getting into and ruining the test signal from REW.

Here is what a sweep looks like in REW, through an interface (not mine), with zero feedback: http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=54748.240

Try to understand what he told you.
The old mBox units had a hardware knob that you used to choose between the software sound and the hardware sound.

The AVID mBox series changed this to using software to route the two types of signal as well as the built in effects.
The Software Returns are actually the computer signals being fed back to the interface, so it's the output of any application using the hardware.

If you want to do the loop back you can't have both the Hardware Inputs and Software Returns up.

You just have to decide if you want to hear the signal as it enters the interface (= Hardware Inputs) or as it is sent from the computer (= Software Returns) then turn down the faders you don't wish to hear.
