Default Layering midi takes on one track??

Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem layering drum parts on a midi track. I am using an AkaiMPK49 with superior drummer 2. I can record the kick and snare parts in one go but when I try to record the high hats or any other part over the top, it copies completley over the existing part instead of merging them together on the one track. Is there a midi setting I need to adjust to stop it from recording destructivley over the existing track? Please help and thankyou!

MIDI Merge - it's in the manual (Pro Tools Reference Guide).
