Default How much longer is Pro Tools Expected to support Digi 002s and 002rs

I noticed that the original mbox is no longer supported on 8.0.3. Are there any plans to end support with digi 002s? just curious...its just makes me wonder.

not a whole lot of people still use the original mbox i guess though...

There are many of us who would like the answer to that question..

My guess is that anyone who has real information can't say, so don't expect anything other than innuendo and conjecture..

What is working for us is the fact that they still sell 003 devices and they are the same in many important ways.

When they release the 004 and it uses a LightPeak connection instead of FireWire, then we will need to worry....

until the 00x family has a multi client shell I don't foresee the 002/003 being dropped

The longer it's supported, the longer until I go Postal once it's dropped.

I got my 002R MANY years after it was first released, with a Factory bundle.

I could not afford a hardware update. And if I was forced to, it would be an MBox Micro or similar, just enough to run any new software.

Conjecture say its should be supported for a while. its not radically different from the 003.

Where Digi to introduce a new platform like a native version with new hardware that could change as they would conceivably shuffle the whole line up.

The MBox was dropped because it used different drivers from the MBox2 series and had gotten to the point that that it was going to be too difficult to maintain in the future.

I have a 002 and don't want to see it dropped but regardless of when I bought it Digi will be looking at when they introduced it and how much it will cost to maintain when they calculate whether or not to keep it.

I can see FIREWIRE being dropped in favour of USB 2.0 or USB 3.0.

The ELEVEN RACK is USB 2.0 - 5 years behind every other Audio Interface!!

I would be surprised if DIGI ever make another Firewire Audio Interface especially as Apple have dropped it to a certain degree.

What that means for DIGI 002 and Mbox PRO is anybody's guess......

I doubt USB2 will ever be a consideration for anything with more IO than the Eleven rack. USB3 might be something good(only time will tell). I see the 002 line working for quite some time. Ultimately, with Mac continually dropping ports(ISA killed the 001) maybe the ultimate solution will be a PCIe card that interfaces with external hardware, much like the old 001 and card. Its all speculation at this point so I would just keep working and not worry about it at all. After all, I know several studios that still run version 5

The only thing that worries me is that I think Digi once said, as long as there are Mbox 2's the original Mbox would still be supported as it was close enough in design to the new ones. Well that has changed. So the 002 is a lot like the 003 and close enough to be supported as long as the 003? I sure hope so, but not gonna count on it.

I'm going to have to disagree USB protocol blows compared to Firewire protocol
CPU dependent vs. dedicated controllerbeing USB's biggest flaw (now if the 3.0 spec adds a dedicated controller this may change)
480 M/b burst vs. 400 M/b sustained transfer rates (large file copy over USB is painful)

Seriously, checkout LightPeak.. Apple already had a proto up and running. I think it's an Intel project..
