Region visually starts but audio doesn't

Fairly new to this milarkey! using my m-audio fast track pro on max os x. On some tracks only, when i play a recording, visually the play marker crosses into a region but the audio for that region doesn't start for another 4 bars. If i copy, cut and paste back into the same place the audio then starts where it should. So i save that but when i later return to the session having closed it, bugger! it's done it again. But at least i've discovered "Pro Tools for musicians and Song Writers" by Gina Fant-Saez. What a great book!

Any help gratefully received. Oh! Haven't got an external Hard Drive yet. Problem?
