Default install Lion on a partition so I can run PT10

Hello,

Any tips very much appreciated.

I have an early 2011 Macbook pro that had OS 10.7 on it until I recently installed El Capitan.

I am trying to figure out how to install Lion on a partition I created on my mac soley to run PT 10. I'm tired of paying the upgrade prices and am perfectly happy with PT10.

I've gotten this far:

1. created a partition using Disk Utility
2. Downloaded my copy of Lion from the App Store.

When I try to install Lion, I get an error message that states "This version of Mac OSX is too new to run "Install Mac OSX" from Mac OS X 10.7"

Any pointers or tips? Thanks a ton for any help.

Google it, but I believe you have to change to date of the system before you can install that disk image.

They went thru a change about a year ago and they changed something that makes it not recognize the disk image if it's too old...or something like that.

I dealt with that when I installed my 10.10.5 image

I won't discount that. Something that might also help is to format the new partition; generally doing that with a new partition done through disk utility shouldn't be necessary but going back a level or two in OSX versions might make that necessary. I've never gone back in OSX versions but forward.

If none of this works you could do an external drive with OSX 10.7.x on it and option-boot to that.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I don't have a "disc image" but rather an installer that i downloaded from Apple's app store yesterday. It downloaded to my applications folder. (screenshot attached)

Thanks

Don't think you can run an older OS installer (Lion) while booted from a newer OS (El Capitan). I've used the method recommended above to create a bootable USB drive, so that seems like maybe your best option.

The latest OS that is certified to work with Protools 10.3.10 is Mountain Lion. Mavericks works too but the uninstaller does not.

Generally speaking, you can not load an OS that is older than the one that came with your system when it was new. I'm not exactly sure but I think 2011 was probably Mountain Lion (not Lion).

I ran Protools 10.x for years on Mountain Lion and was very happy with it. Therefore I recommend this combination if you intend to stay with Protools 10.3.10.

Be sure to keep a copy of the installers for the OS and Protools (and AIR Instruments) for future reinstalls. Doing the USB boot drive method works the best for a fresh install. Once you have a good setup, make a backup (or two) to minimize future setup times.

I couldn't agree more about other things and I forgot to mention this , mountain lion was a much better experience than 10.7

And specifically ML 10.84 and 10.85

2011 MBP's came with Lion; op said he had it on his machine before going to EC.
