Updating DigiBase Catalog contents: HOW?

Okay, so you make a catalog consisting of several folders on different drives. Later, you add stuff to the original folders and you want those additions to be reflected in the DigiBase catalog. Does it just happen automatically? Or does one have to update the catalog? And if so, how? Closest I found to an answer in the manual was this...

"Since a catalog database is not linked to any particular volume, there is a limit to the abilities of the Update Index command. When Update Database for Selected is selected from the Browser menu in a catalog, ProTools searches for the items represented by the aliases in the Catalog..."

The thing is, when I choose a catalog, OR any folder within one, the Update Database for Selected option is always greyed out.

Anyone know what I'm missing?
