Eggs and Wizzoboy - is the distance between the speakers the same as the distance from your ears to each of the speakers? ie: is it an equilateral triangle?

It doesn't look that way in the pics.

No. But neither would they be if I was mixing on a dub stage, or on site at a venue.

Just throwing this in there-mixing on large format consoles in the bad ol' tape days required extra hands and/or a lot of rolling ones chair side to side to both mix and be equidistant from any two of several monitors in the room including nearfields. Let's face it, most consumers don't know or care about spectral balance, or even good tone as far as I can tell. So we really just are doing it for ourselves or clients satisfaction and as such I'm less apt to get too dependent on a "sweet spot". As long as what I hear translates (by knowing your own room) than I'm fine with it.

It is pretty easy to get discouraged by the fact that most music nowadays is listened to on cheap earbuds using mp3 files, but I still remember first listening to Sgt. Peppers on a mono transistor radio with a 2" speaker, and it sounded great!. Then when I got the album, I played it on my mom's tube mono record player, and it sounded even better. (I still have the vinyl album). I didn't get my first proper stereo system until the late 1970's. When I record and mix projects for my musician friends, they certainly care about the spectral balance and tone, but my guess is that their wives wouldn't know the difference between a mono mp3 mix and a great stereo mix. They are more interested in the lyrics and melody as to whether they like the song or not.

I like the idea of the ultra widescreen monitor, but not the price. Plus, I'm mobile, so two displays side by side is my choice.

- Easy to pack/transport.
- Flexible, if I'm mixing in a tight spot I can 'slim down'.
- Built in 'redundancy'.

Sorry but I genuinely don't get this argument.

I don't make music for people who don't care about music.
I make music for people who care about music- so I try to make it as good as I can because I know that the people who care about it will appreciate the effort.

We are all trying to get the best result and I don't think anyone was saying that you shouldn't try. My point was worrying about whether you are or aren't in a "sweet spot" at all times is not necessarily conducive to your workflow. Not saying don't do it. Saying don't stress.
