The Gallery Axis is very cool indeed, especially if the visual "wow" factor is important (i.e., the chrome-finish ones look really cool).

One other option is the JL Cooper MCS 3000 MIDI Panner. This is a MIDI joystick device with 8, 2-function switches, as well as 5 rotary knobs.
I got to use one for a short time, and it was pretty good (considering the cost, compared to Edit Pack or other devices). It's not motorized, nor is it touch-sensitive, but it's still worth checking out to see if it fits your needs.

Hope this helps. But do check out the Gallery Axis panner as well.

Thanks guys. Both of these are great looking, but awfully expensive for such a simple device. I wonder if anyone is using a Wacom tablet with PT, and if it makes panning any easier?

This Wacom stuff might be a good idea. It was used on first SSL digital desks (Scenaria, Omnimix) for panning purposes. Maybe someone has some experience with these. Anyway, I'll give it a try!
