As learning exercises try these and see where it gets you:

Mixing by just doing balances & pan.

Restricting pans to L/C/R and 50% soft pans when needed.

Using a buss comp instead of using indiv channel comps.

Exagerating structural song/compositional dynamic differences using automation snapshots.

You'll notice I never mentioned the word EQ.

Cheers!

"Night and day" no.

Some improvement--probably. But maybe not the first thing you need.

Can you not use the analog input on the DBox? That's what I use for ext. input from phone etc.

Yes, I already used the analog from Mac's audio output.

Next step would be to work on your mixing space so that you can improve the acoustic. THIS ALONE will give you much better results than anything else, beside practicing at getting your skills better.

Things to consider:
1-Recording/session format? If you are recording at 16 bit and/or 44.1K, try 24 bit/48K. The hit on the system is quite modest but sound will be better(all other things being equal)

2-Quality of the input. Cheap mics into the 003 preamps will sound ok, at best. To get better(let's assume the talent is good because it starts there), you need a better mic(we don't know what you have) and a better preamp(Neve and API clones are a step in the right direction).

2(continued)-room acoustics. A bad sounding room will affect anything that is recorded with a microphone.

3-Mixing environment. The best speakers in a poorly treated control room will cause you to hear inaccurately, and you will likely make poor choices in EQ settings. speaker position in the room can also make for major differences in what you hear. If you can't hear an accurate sound, you probably won't get a good mix, especially in the low end. Think 200Hz down to 40Hz(low E string on a bass guitar is 41Hz). Bass guitar/synth and bass drum are probably the toughest things to get right in a mix(good advice already on checking with really good headphones).

Back to the D Box; if all the above isn't right, the D Box won't fix it Once all the above IS right, the D Box might earn its cost
