What do I have to do to utilize pro tools hd with an avid interface into my lap top to reduce my cpu usage when running pro tools with lots of plugins.

Find a laptop with thunderbolt and stuff an HDX card in it and add some Digilink-compatible interface. Or, if you are mixing but not tracking, UA makes some powered external boxes(see their site for connections). Personally, if your laptop is running out of power, a better laptop is probably the wisest(and cheapest) first move. And, do you REALLY need a laptop(you can get a lot more horsepower for less money with a desktop)?

I believe my lap top is plenty powerful enough and I don't know of a desk top that is really any more powerful. Anyway I track as well as mix on my lap top , but I am afraid as , some songs require more tracks, and therefore plugins, I may run out of cpu power. I have no issues so far but I'm just looking to the future. Thanks for the advice and I will check out the ua stuff.

I find it hard to believe that you can't find a desktop machine more powerful than your laptop.

What are the specs of your laptop?

Well spec'd laptop but nowhere near as powerful as some of the desktop machines out there.

Regardless, give us a typical session layout and we can advise if you'll have enough power. I'm willing to bet you won't have any issues.

At my first demo of HD/Native, it was version 8.5 and was run on a MBP i7 quad with 16GB of RAM. The demo session was 150 tracks(5.1 movie soundtrack) with a video window and running at a 128 buffer(HDN card was in an external chassis connected to a card slot). Having said that, I also think that each newer version, while giving us more features, also chews up a lot more horsepower.
