no sound/playback

set up:
windows xp sp3
pro tools 8 essentials
m audio fast track interface
im using headphone and my surround sound for playback

i have my guitar plugged into the interface, i have pro tools open, i create a new track as mono, and when i click record on the track itself, i can see the bar go up and down (green bar on the mix menu) and when i stop, i cant hear anything! the bars dont even move or anything. i can however hear the metronome clicks.

when i try to load a preloaded track, nothing comes out of either speakers.

i dont know if its my interface or if its pro tools itself, im leaning more on the pro tools, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

basically my problem is the sound, i get no playback at all!

Hello,

Just to clarify, are your speakers or headphones plugged into the Fast Track?
To get the guitar input into Pro Tools from the Fast Track, you need to select input 2 in Pro Tools. The XLR or Mic plug on the Fast Track is input 1 in Pro Tools.
When you see the green signal meter, is it a meter from the metronome?
Does your Fast Track have 3 knobs on the front, or 3 knobs on the top?
I'm trying to determine which Fast Track you have.
If the knobs are on the front, turn the Mix knob to the middle position.
This will balance signals coming into the Fast Track and the signals leaving Pro Tools.
