Default so it all comes down to.....overhead mics

Hey everyone,

Looking for two reasonably good overhead mics for drums(i play rock/metal/alternative). i dont need anything fancy, but ive been using some AKG mics better suited for choirs, so i think just about anything would be better. any suggestions would be great, and.....money is an issue, the less expensive the better. thanks!

What are you using AKG C1000's? If you are not give those a try I have used them in session work and they sound great for the price.

guitar center is selling two Octava MC012 for $99.00..just demo about 5 mics and to get the best two. I use these for overs and accoustic guitars and they are great! cant beat the GC special right now. 2 mics for 99.00

woa! $99.00 for two octavas is really cheap. Here in Sweden they cost $400 for a pair.
If anyone would like to try out two for me and send them over here, I would be eternally
greatful.
Drop me a message if you would like to, and we can work something out.

thanks

Roger

Octavas havea notorious reputation for bad quality control. I bought a pair of these not too long ago, and after getting 5 of them that didn't work, I finally gave up.

I'm a major fan of the Shure VP-88 stereo mic for drum overheads. It has great frequency response, and being a single housing stereo mic, there's never phase issues between the two tracks. I get great imaging, and the mics response gives me superb details, whether I'm doing rock, jazz, funk, whatever. It retails for aorund $800, and is well worth it. It si also a great piaano mic.

ok very good, i will go out to GC and get a few. if anyone has anything else they want to recommend, as in cheap good mics that would be great, maybe one for vocals, im looking at all the affordable ones, meaning.....under 200 bucks. thanks

while cheap and good are getting closer to reality, I'd recommend saving your money and buysing better quality, especially for vocals. for around 4800 you could get a pair of Rode NTK's, which are excellent on vocals, would make great overhead mics, and also work relly well on electric and acoustic gtrs, reeds, just about anything. we have a pair of them, they are by far the most used mics in the arsenal.

Night....

when I demod the five at GC I did the best I could at matching them (though its not something you can really do in a store) but take out your car keys and jingle them in front as you listen under headphones to each one as well as humming, talking, etc....I did notice one sounded different than the other 4 and another (before they replaced it for me as one of the 5) could not take a mic chord due to the oval shape of the michrophone bottom and the chord clip did not line up inside the mic chord input) so yea, there are some quality control issues but once i left there with the best two I've had no problems with mine and thats when they were going for $199.00 for two

good luck man
