Default G-port on Mirror Door G4

Has any one installed a g-port or stealth port into a mirror door G4 with out using a PCI slot?
What are the pitfalls of taking off the heatsink from the CPU? etc

...perhaps you don't have an open PCI slot? If you did, and you saved that little PCI-slot plate that came with your gPort, you could put it there (that's what we're doing).

What are the pitfalls of taking the heatsink off the CPU?

Are you seriously asking that question? Have you ever put your hand on that heat sink after the machine has been running for 10 minutes?

If you need one of those PCI cover plates for the G-port, just call Griffin and I'm sure they'll give you one. IF they won't, let me know and I'LL dig one up for you.

You may also call Griffin and find out that you wouldn't really hurt anything by extending the cable that came with your Gport to get it around the CPU. That's all they did when a couple of machines back had about 6 inches further for them to travel from the port on the motherboard to the backplane of the mac.

Good luck.

The whole point guys is that i don't have a free PCI slot, or i might have considered using it.

Also i am not talking about removing the Heat sink forever (yes, that would be incredibly stupid, Mr Simpson), just so i can access the modem port and put it back. Remember i am talking about the new mirror door machines!

Mr. Simpson is my Dad, and I know you're talking about the mirrored door machine. Taking the heat sink off could be a bit daunting. I'm assuming that you ONLY intend to take it off so that you can get to the modem port and you'll never actually run the machine without it. If that's the case, just be extremely careful since there may be some of those "proprietary" screw heads that you need special tools to get to in order to detach the heat sink. There is also a heat transfer piece on the side that yo have to make sure you get good contact when you put it back together. The biggest snag would be if the heat sink is attached to the heat transfer pieces with some sort of adhesive. Good luck and be careful, we'd all hate to see your machine get toasted.

Shawn, as i said in my previous post, it would be just to access the modem port. I've taken heatsinks off before; just make sure you have a tube of thermal paste handy!

I'm just wondering if anyone has actually done this to these machines and if they have any tips.
