Genelec 5.1?
What are your thoughts on Genelec 8320 / 8330 with 7350 sub for a 5.1 setup for television broadcast?
Room size = 18ft x 12ft approx Using Protools 2018 with D-command. I'm also running short on XLR I/Os on my patch, so I can use the digital XLR options and ethernet. Thanks everyone.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
You'd love it. Plenty of power for that size room. I have a similar size room but I use the JBL LSR4300 series so I'm partial to that. Might be worth looking into if you can find a set. I use it with AES.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
Check out the 8330 specs for max spl:
https://www.genelec.com/8330a You need up to 20 db so if your monitoring at 82 for example you will need 102 . It does 104. If you monitor any higher you MIGHT run out of headroom depending what you are mixing. If you do decide on going with the Genelecs it only makes sense to go with the 8330.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
To be able to use Genelec's built-in bass management you need to use analog inputs into the sub and continue analog from there to the 5 monitors. If you want to use AES/EBU, you'd need the Genelec 9301a interface
The older 7200 series subs had multi-channel AES inputs, which work very well, so if you can find one of those, it would suit you well. |

Re: Genelec 5.1?
8330 (or 8331 if you have the budget) and 7360 sub would be my recommendation for your room dimensions. If you want to go AES and bass management on top of the Lfe channel, you´ll need the 9301 unit.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
Hey thanks guys - I've only just seen these posts (I don't get email notifications like I used to, must look in to that.)
Been super busy so 5.1 has been on hold. Just saying thanks for now.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
I have a Genelec 8020/7050 5.1 surround setup. Maybe I want to upgrade to bigger satellites, as I want a more full range speaker instead of base management. I sometimes find it difficult to make mix decisions.
Would a 8330 setup be a good step up? Or is it too close to the 8020’s? Also I’d love to use SAM.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
Hi think that the 8330 will be a very good step further, comparing to the 8020.
Having said that, I don´t see the problem of bass managing it, in particular if you use GLM.

Re: Genelec 5.1?
Thanks Paul.
Regarding the specs, the 8330 go a lot further in bass, so that would be great. Since I moved to another studio, I'm having doubts with my mix decisions. I have measured (only stereo) a couple of times with Sonarworks, the figures seem to look good, but not feeling really confident when mixing. Somebody else having those problems?

I had a lot of trouble feeling comfortable with 8320s. The biggest help was adding a bit more space between the listening position and monitors, but the was the result of throwing up the centre monitor and running GLM from various distances from the front wall. It didn’t reduce specific nodes in the room, but it did alter the overall low to high frequency balance. Genelec also have some pretty good setup/monitor placement suggestions too. If you haven’t had a look, I would definitely check them out. Once you find a spot that measures nice and flat, run GLM, then listen to some material that you are familiar with. You can tweak GLM to make it sound a little closer to what you expect. I found the default GLM measurement to be a tad light in presence for how I usually like to mix.
