Default Volume fader vs post send fader - same scale?

Having trouble articulating this, so it has been hard to find the right answer.

I build a mix, then I start clipping the input to my master fader.

I go to turn down tracks and now my post fader sends aren't getting the same amount of signal, so the feel of the mix has changed.

-Do I simply turn up all post fader sends the exact amount that I turned the volume faders down?

-Does the behavior change if the fader is below the zero mark? Sometimes if I have staged poorly I have two sends setup to the same effect...when I go to raise the send level to compensate for the change, its doesn't seem that the amount of volume dropped correlates exactly to the amount of send replaced..???

Just turn down the master fader that is clipping. Plugins are post-fader.

Thanks for quick reply.... I never got that the master fader coming down actually turned down the signal coming into it. Thats a big help

Master fader controls any output you have in the mixer, whether internal or external. They are there even if they are not visible. Use them to control output levels. Very important to understand to its fullest.

If I encounter this in an aux, which goes before the master fader, I've got the same problem as before.
what is the math involved to sort out the post fader send change after a volume fader change, or to change
from post to pre fader?

If you turn down all your tracks EXCEPT the AUX tracks(fed by post-fade sends), that should maintain relative balance. While it does reduce what goes to the AUX tracks, you actually want that, otherwise the AUX tracks would sound too loud. I do this all the time as my session templates have the TRIM plugin inserted in the last slot on all AUDIO and INSTRUMENT tracks(not on AUX or Master). The TRIM plugin is set to -8db and all are in bypass during tracking. Once I get to the mixing phase, I enable all the TRIM plugins and the entire mix drops, but balance stays right in the ballpark. And, since TRIM is in the last insert slot, it has no effect on any other plugins on the tracks.
