Default mbox users: suggest good front end (mic pre & A/D)

Any body have suggestions for a good mic pre & A/D convertor package?

It would be great if I could also clock to this device with the hopes of improving overall mix clarity (I have been told an improved clocking source can really help protools sound nicer).

thanx,

tony

dbx 386 - dual channel mic pre w/ digital outs via spdif + word clock on bnc. Good sounding front end if you want tube (vocals, guitars, what have you), and I think you can get one for under $500.

You should give a price range. Here's another suggestion:

I can spend about $1000.

Have any of tried clocking with something like the mini-me or metric halo ULN-2? Have you gotten better sounding mixes? Did you notice a considerable improvement in sound quality of the a/d conversion?

thanx,

tony
