Default New Mac Pro's, worth it for Post Facility?

Hey there guys, Have a solid question for all of you. My company is currently in the midst of building an Atmos mix theatre and I'm trying to decide What kind of computing power we want. The new mac pro's are appealing, but the high price, and the fact that in order to run our 5 HDX rigs we would need 5 magma chassis is un-appealing. In short, my question is:

On a full size dubbing theatre would you prefer Early 2013 12 Core mac pros or later 2013 12 core mac pros? Thanks!

Alex

Nice problem to have!

Sorry, can't help you. I will say though, that if you need everything to be working flawlessly next month, the old Mac Pro's are proven. There will surely be some bugs to iron-out with the new Mac Pro's. AND, you will probably be completely committed to PT11, since it's not clear that we'll ever get PT10 on Mavericks, and I doubt those new Mac Pro's can even boot in Mountain Lion.

If you haven't already, have Avid consult with you directly. Good luck.

Your biggest question first should be:
How are you going to get your clients to pay extra for your Atmos mix?
If somehow you can get them to actually pay you extra to an Atmos mix over and above your regular deliverables then you should not hesitate in buying the best Mac you can afford.

It would be possible to run pt 10, fully supported on the new Mac Pro under windows 7

Marti nails it again.
Build it and they will come?
Not always.
Also, with HDX, and the new mac pros, do you REALLY need 5 rigs, and 5 expansion chassis?

Marti, how many rigs do you run at The Dubstage?

This is a good point. Our facility will be stuffed with the latest and greatest gear I can assure you. We mainly have 5 Systems because we wanted to separate everything nicely. Master Rig with HDX2 , 4 HDX rigs for Foley, SFX, Music, Dialogue. Might be over kill, but we will most likely never have any power issues.

That's my point.
With the newest macs, and having everything split, I can't see why you would even need magma chassis.

ahh I get yea. I think we're going with the Old ones, mainly for the PT10 compatibility, their neat-ness in racks, Hard drive bays and more. Is it over kill? Most certainly. But it would be the equivalent of buying 3 new ones with out any peripherals.

Alex, yes. That's the downside of the new ones. Lots of external boxes all over the place.

Because this issue is so up in the air, I wouldn't buy anything until after NAB. There's a lot to be said for the magma/mac mini route if you can't wait.
