True we need to do some workarounds here and there with the midi production part of the productions but rather do them than trying to make two DAW's to play nicely together.
Chris:
You left out one other daw and that's Digital Performer. Have been using it more and more due to it's way better MIDI implementation than what PT has. The only real thing missing in DP's MIDI implementation is mute note. I'm not trying to make DP and PT work together - when I start something in one daw I finish it there. The only thing I crossbreed is plants and flowers.

Right now for me anything existing I'm doing in PT is finishing there but all new stuff is going over to DP (soon to be DP9). Especially if it has anything to do with video or I want more than 2 channel (I only have PT vanilla)

Well, Some big Producers use PT, But using PTHDX, and is Big more Expensive that PT Native & PT, and AVID simply drop away the theme on Audio Hardware since you can use Any Audio Device (PC Sound Card, Internal Speakers or $99 USB "Audio Interface"), and just put big interest in Real Hardware (PT HDX and Interfaces, SL6 M10 M40, S3 and other control hardware) but for the rest like me, with low budget to buy that cain of hardware, we need to look other brands to use a good Interfaces. I use 002R for years without issues, today I prefer use 003R with Pro Tools because to me work much better than my Safire 40.

and Yes is not only MIDI and Audio, I think we need some more Plugins, Maybe couple of New Virtual Instruments (seven years since Xpand, Vacuum, Structure Free, Boom, Mini Grand) on a Basic Bundle, that cost $899 for PT starters.....

AVID need to rethink the future strengths for PT......

Hey Jack

Never tried DP but heard it is really good with midi but as we have soo many DAW's I doubt my collegues (who are my 2 brothers) will think let's buy another one just for fun hehe

But Thanks for the input. Will see if I can demo it though.

They do have a 30 day fully functioning free demo (no iLok needed). And a crossgrade from other daws and selected programs as well.

Oh yeah - unlike every other daw out there there's only the one version; it's cross-platform as well.

I have no problem writing and arranging in PT - I do look at some of the tools and features in other DAWs with some envy but I really like how straightforward PT is. It works for me.

Reason is also cross-platform and non-tiered. The audio editing in that app is finally coming of age. Some features are pretty slick, e.g. "quick-swipe" comping with automatic crossfades.

Sheesh the big problem that some people may not seeing is the use of the word production.. As if production was only the step of composition (where PT might lack a bit on the midi side and where other software are better at doing) But editing, arranging, mixing is all part of the production process, and at that, PT is straight forward one of the best software out there to do that.

So maybe people should stop using production as a one and all term for what they mean to say, if your talking of pro tools in term composition, then say so. :)

Sorry to have been too unspecific..

I did mention if you're just adding orchestration (in VE) or additive overdub midi data to bed.. ProTools is used all the time for that. That is part of the the very definition of "Post Production".

But if you need to start, rhythm track, all from midi (drums too), from the jump.. ProTools is NOT the most widely used tool for that.. And is not savvy enough a creation tool in my experience. Used all the main DAWs except Nuendo... And ProTools midi for an Electronica creative production session is THE PITS!!

Maybe a better word is "composition".. Production is adding confusion. PT is not the best composition tool.

Which may be the two edged sword that keeps PT from having tons of new features, b/c there are only so many ways to slice audio

Aha! We must've been writing at the same time. You beat me to it. We have been dealing with a difference of definitions for sure.

Composition in electronic beats driven music- ProTools is a drag

Composition in orchestral music.. - ProTools is a fine tool!
Production - best tool in the biz I've ever worked with. And I'm fluent in Logic, DP and Cubase as well. I "choose" PT for production. Hands down.
