Default Using my phone as a hotspot worked, hotspot in windows did not

I was on a mobile job that had no WiFi available, but I wanted to use PT Control while setting up.

PT Control worked great when I used my cell phone to create a WiFi hot spot, with my computer and ipad connected to said hotspot

Creating a hotspot with my computer alone (http://lifehacker.com/turn-a-windows...com-1593327340) didn't work at all. Possibly my own mistake, who knows. But it was super easy with my phone.

Why do you need a WiFi hub at all? Why not just use an ad-hoc network?

That's the part that didn't work.

Ad-hoc is very different than "creating a hotspot". With an ad-hoc network there is no hotspot/basestation/wifi hub and neither end is pretending to be one, its a direct peer-peer WiFi link. Some older versions of iOS has broken ad-hoc networking, I don't recall the versions. It's easy at least to set up an ad-hoc network and conform it's live (ping he other host, and see if Control works).

With that in mind Darryl, I'll try this when I get home.

Great, that's it. Also see the notes here for completely unrelated software, but the troubleshooting steps may help. http://www.logicinmind.com/index.php?id=75

wow that was cool. and really pretty easy.

I still haven't tried to hook the control app up to it yet, but it appears doable.

So they removed the feature from Windows 8.1 because of course they would, right? Instead of mucking around with command line stuff I downloaded a bare-bones utility from here http://geekltd.com/create-connect-ad...windows-8-8-1/

And all is right with the world. I used it to create an a network (SSID ProTools, password of my choosing) and launched PT and PTControl. Worked right off the bat, no lag or anything.
