8.0.3 serious delay comp issues!
Have ran into a serious delay comp issue with 8.0.3..
Have been mixing a song for a client for weeks know doing small tweaks as we go. Been using 8.0.1 since the mix started installed 8.0.3 two days ago and just started to feel like the drums had no attack an the entire mix sounded mushy. last night raised the drum mstr a few db to try to compensate a bit but still something was just not sounding right to me. I have been triggering a new snare drum via midi using "Strike" I started to dig a little deeper and soloed the drums, It sounded like the snare trigger was late and I know I was meticulous when making sure the trigger was in time with the recorded snare drum but it sounded like the snare trigger(midi note) had some king of a reverse sound happening before the actual snare hit (trigger) sounded as if it had lost all of it's attack and the snare had been reversed? Was thinking I was nuts? I went and turned off Delay Comp, and to my amazement the strange reverse sound was gone before the snare hit and all the attack and punch came back to drums! The entire mix sounds like it did before installing 8.0.3! 100% better! So I reinstalled 8.0.1 an all is slamming once more.. I was using Delay comp set @ long 48k /24 session Quad 2.66 intel mac pro Magma Per46 chassis 4 cards 1 UA card in Cpu. |

Do you have DSP Caching enabled. If you do. Turn it off.... Yesterday
It's the root to all evil

Re: 8.0.3 serious delay comp issues!
Good lord- I had this problem several times and thought I was going insane. It makes sense now. What's ridiculous is trying to explain to your client what the freaking problem is with your $50,000 DAW. It didn't do it all the time- just enough to destroy my confidence in delay compensation. Since everyone was crowing about how great delay comp is, I thought it was my imagination. There definitely needs to be a rider to the "manual" to explain this stuff. All this "compensate for input delays", "compensate for output delays", "enable delay compensation", short, long, dsp cache- holy moly! Do we really need all these options? Just keep the tracks in sync with each other!!! Seems pretty basic.

Re: 8.0.3 serious delay comp issues!
Yeah it drives me nuts... during one mix, my computer crashed and prefs were trashed. Then when I go back to my mix, I forget to uncheck use DSP cache (probably the smallest checkbox in the entire program) and mix with it off for awhile with a roomy drum sound... just barely enough to cause problems but not enough to set off fire alarms.
And yes, explaining it to the client after it's caught is one of those conversations you'd rather not have, and hopefully they still trust you after that. |

Re: 8.0.3 serious delay comp issues!
actually, there are times when you do not want the software to compensate for input or output conversion delay. so the checkboxes are good.
they didn't make it selectable just to be mean or anything like that. :) |
