Default Latency Issue on PC

Hi!
I'm using ProTools FREE and am experiencing ridiculous latency problems.
My H/W Buffer is set to 2048 because PTF wouldn't let me go smaller than that.

This is not a playback/record issue as I only need to arm a track to notice the delay between the input and the output.

My PC's config follows:
-Intel PII 450MHz
-128MB RAM
-Sound card: Turtle Beach Pinnacle (Rev F)

So, here is my concern:
I don't really care if PTF doesn't work on my computer, but I'm planning to buy Digi001 in a while, so I was wondering if it would have the same problems. I will be running it on this same computer.

I have already created a special startup profile without any networking or any webcam drivers just to have PTF run exactly the same.

I appreciate any help.
Julian.

You won't have this sort of latency problem with the Digi001. My stripped down 400mhz PII could comfortably use the 128-sample buffer size with the Digi001, which makes monitoring latency unnoticable. Pro Tools LE also has a "Low Latency Monitoring" mode, which reduces latency even further by routing input data directly to the card outputs, rather than through host RAM.

In many ways, the performance of Pro Tools LE is far superior to that of Pro Tools FREE.

I have two questions about monitoring latency. My setup: PII 333+Win ME, Audiomedia III+Wavedriver 1.7, 128 MB RAM, Mackie 1404.

The solution of muting the rec enabled channel doens't work. The only thing that happens is that the signal isn't sent to the PTFree masterfaders. I still receive the sound from my computer/Audiomedia card in the mix with the rest of the recorded channels, delayed. Is there a way to turn this off?

The second question is. What can I do to be able to reduce the H/W Buffer size in my setup? The only size that works now is 8192.

Rudy,

I'd really recommend you consider buying Pro Tools LE for use with your AMIII. I think it's available for around $100, and will give you considerably better performance and functionality than PTFree does. It should also solve both of the specific problems you asked about.

Eric,

thanks for your quick reply! I'm gonna check out the Yellow Pages now. I thought LE would be $400,- or so.

Still, if there's anybody who finds solutions for these two problem within my setup, please let me know.

I'm planning on purchasing the Digi 001 to go on my PC which is a Dell, P3, 866, with 256MB PC600 RDRAM, 40GB Ultra ATA HD (7200RPM), 8x/4x/32x CDRW, and DVD.

Would latency be a problem here? What OS should I use for the Digi, has it had better luck with 98SE or ME?

Chris

I haven't been able to find Pro Tools LE alone, without the Digi 001 hardware, for sale. Where might I purchase it?, web, mail order...$100 or so is a great deal.

Beamus,

you have to ask for the Pro Tools LE update. It is supposed to contain the whole program.

I ordered one just a few days ago, for about $75,- incl. tax at the Digidesign dealer here in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Good luck,

Few questions asked here:
1. The Pro Tools LE (Software Only):
As far as I know can be purchased through the site and even you'll get to d/l it directly until the CD will arrive (via mail).
2. ANY PII350 and above (and even Celerons!) can handle the PTLE with no latency.
The latency is the audio card problem not the computer.the

Hi Rock_artist,

I couldn't find a place to d/l here..am I missing something? My wife says I can never find anything.

Other than 16 more audio tracks, what is different about LE? Any more plug-ins or effects?

Thanks everyone who responded!

Hey Rudy, let us know how you like LE when you get it up and running. tks.
