Default New Studio - $35,000 for Equipment - Ideas?

The studio is being built and there is a $35,000 budget for equipment. Mostly rock/pop/gospel. What would you do?

I will create music as well. Really this is going from being a personal studio that does projects on the side to a project studio that I will use personally on the side.

Starting from scratch, the HD3 is really attractive, considering all the plug-ins bundled in (and the fact that the additional card is only costing you $2,000).

Add up the HD3, a couple of 192's (and perhaps the add-on cards), a computer, video monitors, a Control 24, SCSI controller, four hard drives, tape back-up, perhaps the Waves Platinum bundle -- and you're pretty close to using up your budget. You'll still need monitors and mics, but you'll have to economize there (others on this thread have been recommending lots of fancy outboard stuff, but it's out of your budget for now).

Also keep in mind that there will be a lot of incidental expenses (wiring, furniture, racks, etc.) to actually get up and running, so be sure to leave some of your budget in reserve.

I would definitely plan for HD, though. Even at current used prices, Mix systems aren't that good of a bargain, especially if you want to set yourself up for the long term.

One Leslie 122 or {145/147} and either a Model C Hammond or Model A or a B-2 w/ percussion retrofit. If not, then the Roland or X-B2- these new keys need the 12pin to 11pin Hammond- Leslie converter box/powersupply.

The lowball Joe Meek stuff is cheap for line in- and has good sustain.

I'd stay with a G-4 Level 3 cache machine (867+)

BU to Firewire VXA? (Apple store) Retrospect?

Why spend good money now on a 414 or a 103/147 when there's Marshall and/or Studioprojects? I'm just wondering out loud... I wouldn't refuse one of those Soundeluxe mics 'though. Or a real Elam.

The Marshall fooled quite a few over on the 001/Le mic shootout. Oops.

4) Sennheiser 609 dynamics for cabs/Leslie (they're cheap and they're ruler flat)

If it's a choice between the Hammond and the Avalon...what will bring them back? My .02

Control 24
PTs HD
Cinema Display

Lee's post seems pretty much on to me. Used Mix systems are not yet cheap enough to warrant going that way.

Depending on your work pace, you might forgo the Control 24 (although you'll then need more mic preamps). I've worked without tape backup (using CDR or DVD-RAM), but if you're building a pro studio (with clients), you'll need fast reliable backup.

HD3 with a couple of 192's. Control 24 (this will also give you 16 okay preamps). A couple of good outboard pre's (API, sytek, neve etc). Some good mics (AKG414TLII, Soundelux, Royer etc.) not forgetting some dynamic mics (SM57, sennheiser MD421). Run it on an Apple G4/733(now very cheap).

Good monitors - (Genelics, JBL etc). Some good & cheap firewire drives (I use LaCie).

I think that lot would be about $35,000 and it is more or less what I did. So far it works very very well and apart from the control24 is pretty mobile.
