Default Filmsound Articles

Circumstances allow me to sort my filmsound notes and articles and collect them on my Film Sound Articles site.
I'm starting with an old friend Walter Murch. This 2 short videos contain a lot of information you probably know very well, but it's always good the hear it again.

Cheers,

Guido

New Filmsound Article online!

This time, you can meet a very active forum member: Frank Kruse
I found this great video with Frank, talking about his work as a sound designer and sound editor. In the video, Frank und shows and explains scenes of the movies Rush and Cloud Atlas.
The video is in german, so I did a summary in english.

Quote:
Frank Kruse - about the term 'sound design'

Many people do not understand the meaning of the term 'sound design': they think all you need to do is sync up the sound and underscore what happens in the picture. You can, of course, do this but it is not what defines a sound editor's or sound designer's work.

Film is always about telling stories and supporting the plot. You can, therefore, drop the occasional line of dialogue because you don't need to verbalise everything that happens on screen. Otherwise it feels like a filmed stage play. But for me, film is very different from theatre. I will always aim to maximise the potential of each channel of the medium.

New filmsound Article: Sound Designers Ben Burtt, Walter Murch and Gary Rydstrom in conversation about the film Making Waves from Midge Costin.

https://www.guidohelbling.com/film-sound-articles

In this recording made during the Tribeca Film Festival, sound designers Ben Burtt, Walter Murch and Gary Rydstrom take part in a podium discussion about their experience and expertise.
Sometimes it seems so easy:

If you don't have a big budget for visual effects, use sound! You can tell a story almost exclusively with sound.
Have fun,

Guido

Sight And Sound - The Cinema of Walter Murch is a 70-minute documentary from Jon Lefkovitz dedicated to the work of sound editor and sound designer, Walter Much.
Murch discusses the films The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, Touch of Evil, Jarhead, Ghost, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and many others.
Quote:
Walter Murch:
Sound effects have a way of sneaking under the radar, so that you can be affected by them in musical ways and emotional ways.
But because they seem to be produced by the visuals - by the world that you are looking at - you tend to accept them at face value and not as something that filmmakers are doing to create an emotional effect with you.
The movie is free to watch!

New Filmsound Article: Ann Kroeber speaks at the AES Meeting in Boston 2009 about Alan Splet, working with David Lynch, contact microphones and much more.
The work of film sound designers and field recordist Ann Kroeber and Alan Splet has left an indelible mark on cinema and, particularly, on the way sound is used to tell stories creatively. Reason enough to devote an article to the dynamic duo, Ann Kroeber and Alan Splet.

Default Walter Murch Lecture - From The Godfather to The God Particle

New Walter Murch Article Online: From The Godfather to The God Particle

Walter Murch gives a lecture about the history of film and filmmaking in general at the Sheffield Doc Fest. The presentation is roughly 45 minutes long, followed by an interview of similar length during which Walter talks a lot about cinema.

A great section is around 1h 12min, when Walter talks about music in film. Learn more about, why film and music loathe each other, learn something about modular art forms with great repetition and specially: saliva music!
