Default Sound device not found

since my only sound card is the digi sound card, when I want the pc to make system sounds, as well as use a 3rd party softsynth as stand alone, how do I make it so that the digi sound card can work for all system sounds? I am running 5:3:1. Do I need to upgrade to 6:4 and get some other application to accomplish this?

I also only have a digi sound card.

I've spent hours trying all the great ideas posted by Rail guy about the MME helper, and I do see that my Digi 001 is listed as the default in Sounds and Audio devices. I can hear sounds in Real Player, and in Windows media player, but not in Explorer. It's a bummer because a flash site just launced with the narration I recorded - but I can't hear the damn thing. Same situation with sites using Quicktime, and I can't hear anything in itunes either.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Dawn
