Import Video - Audio Import Option Disabled
I'm trying to import a video into a new session. In the Video Import Options dialog, the "Import Audio From File" checkbox is disabled.
The video file I am attempting to use as my source is an MXF file exported from Premiere Pro. The audio is correctly embedded in this file, a fact I confirm by playing back the MXF file in VLC Player. Any ideas why can't I get the audio to import along with the video? Many thanks in advance. Re: Import Video - Audio Import Option Disabled
Given the lack of replies, presumably no one else has run into this issue.
On a lark, I went back to the original NLE project (in Premiere Pro) and re-generated a new video file, however, this time using a different codec (H.264, vs. DNxHD on the earlier export). And now, lo and behold, if I attempt to import the video, the "Import Audio From File" checkbox is enabled. So, clearly, the availability of this function is dictated by the codec employed in the source video file. Now the question is, why will Pro Tools import audio embedded in an H.264-based video file, but not from a DNxHD-based video file? This is particularly annoying since DNxHD is Avid's "preferred" video codec (see http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...r-Pro-Tools-11). And why is this difference in behavior not documented in the manual? |

Re: Import Video - Audio Import Option Disabled
OK, mea culpa. The difference in behavior is, in fact, documented.
I was about to submit a bug report, but went back to make absolutely sure the docs were silent on the subject, but upon closer scrutiny, found on p. 1156 that the description of the "Import Audio from File" checkbox in fact says "QuickTime Video only", which explains why the checkbox is disabled for DNxHD content. I still find this a frustrating difference in behavior, since DNxHD is Avid "preferred" video codec, but at least it's not a bug. I wonder whether the promised elimination of the dependency on QuickTime for Windows will mean importing of audio from DNxHD-based video files will one day be possible. |
