Default Good home setup for $1k-2k?

I've got about $1k-2k to spend. I've got Digi 002, one or two decent mics (no preamps though), amps, & guitars.

What is a good quality basic setup?

Right now, I just put a mic up to a guitar & record into Digi 002. It sounds fine, but I want a better tone.

Do I need a preamp?
Do I need a converter?
Do I need a compressor/limiter?

I want quality, but I don't need major league stuff...

Thanks.....

hey,

you have alot of options for bettering your studio with 1-2K. for guitar recording, i've had great success using an SM57 close miced and a Royer ribbon mic a few feet back. Royers are about $1000 new. I would maybe look into buying one of the Waves plugin bundles, they start somewhere around $800 for the good ones. You could grab a Digimax LT optical preamp(8 channels), new about $800. I would hold on the external compressors and whatnot because the digi ones are generally good(Waves are much better)
its a pretty broad question. what do you already have? are you going to want to track drums? are you going to be singing?

ev

Anoutboard pre/compresor certainly expands your options when tracking, currnetly you cannot compress when you track, but the 002 pres are very good.

check out the sennheisser e609 silver series mics. they are very close reissues to the original 409's, renounded for their excellent application to electric guitar.

check into the FMR audio RNP and RNC combo, could be jsut the ticket for your budget.
