Default Confused about recording processors via SPDIF

I am planning on getting another AD to bypass my 002r's AD converters. I plan on using the SPDIF connection(s).

Say I have a compressor on the new AD and this is hooked up SPDIF out/in on the 002r, how does the processed sound get recorded? Is it though the Bounce, or will I have to create a new audio track and set the input of that track to SPDIF? I am not exactly sure about what happens if you bounce to disk choosing the SPDIF output, if that would take care of it, or if a recording of a new track is needed.

If this is the case, once I have the new (processed) mix in a new track in my PT session, do I have to bounce that again?

Yes, otherwise there wouldn't be a need for me to record the SPDIF loop!

This IS confusing; I am not talking about a channel strip and confusing it with an analog-to-digital converter.

Let's keep it simple:

002r: SPDIF out.

ADC: SPDIF in. The ADC will have outboard hooked up to it.
ADC: SPDIF out. This goes back to the...

002r's SPDIF in.

How do I record this in Pro Tools?

& I quote, "Lets keep it simple"...

002- stereo track, input set to SPDIF L-R

& there are channel strips that have SPDIF which was why we're geting so confused b/c u didn't full explain what u waned or was doing or even using for that matter which would have gotten us straight to the answer..

but anwayz, that it... that simple

Thank you!! I appreciate your help.

Okay, now that I've got the answer for my specific configuration, let me ask this - if you have a channel strip with a built-in converter that does SPDIF, would recording it back into PT be any different?

Nope.. It'd still be the same(& I'm sure u meant built in compressor)...

Of course if its just 1 channel then, that'd be SPDIF L or R but same concept tho...

You can use the spdif to add two extra channels of io or you can use it to hook up an external unit, fx, dynamics etc.

Pro tools doesn't have delay compensation so you'll have to manually compensate for the round trip ad/da. Which IMHO is a real PIA.
