Automatically creating playlists. Is that possible?
Hi! I'm new to pro tools so I may be missing something blindingly obvious...
I have not my head wrapped around how playlists (should) work in pro tools because I'm struggling to figure out how to do what seems like the most obvious use case for playlists. I'd like to create a new playlist every time I record over something without manually doing anything. Is there a way to create a new playlist for every take automatically? I know I can automatically create playlists in loop record mode, but I'm not always in loop record. I know you can automatically create playlists if the take you just did is longer than the previous take, but again, that's not always the case. Isn't there a way to say, "I'm recording, this should be a new playlist," every time I record? I know there are key commands to create new playlists, and I can do it with the mouse, but all that takes me out of the flow when I just really want to save all my takes as playlists no matter what. I know I can go back and try find "matching alternatives," but all those seem like a hack to just automatically create playlists from takes. Studio one has something like "Layers to Takes" which does this. |

Re: Automatically creating playlists. Is that possible?
In Preferences, there is this exact option. Just find it and check the box

Whoa, really? Can you tell me what's it's called? I've been searching the prefs for weeks and haven't found anything. The only ones I can find are related to fully overlapped clips or looping.

Re: Automatically creating playlists. Is that possible?
There is no option to do what you are asking. The two options (loop record and overlap) are the only ones. Loop especially is there to not "break the flow"
The shortcut key is really simple (and if you are manually stopping anyway, it shouldn't be any worse to hit it). Just turn on in Preferences>Editing "Suppress Name Dialog When Creating New Playlists" and hit Ctrl+\ each time (or turn on all 3 options and you'll only have to use the shortcut key if you stop early in a take)

Yes. He already knows about that one (mentioned in the original post.)

Re: Automatically creating playlists. Is that possible?
I believe that 2018.7 has a new feature that will move clips to a new playlist if you start recording over(assuming its a new setting in prefs, but have not installed it yet)

Re: Automatically creating playlists. Is that possible?
Thanks for all the replies everyone! Sounds like Pro Tools can't do what I was hoping.
For background, I mostly use Ableton Live and then use Studio One for the recording/comping vocals (which does keep every take automatically without me doing anything), but I've heard good things about the comping abilities in pro tools so I've been giving it a try. I'm finding PT has some workflow stuff that doesn't suit me, but I've been trying to push through though since I know a lot of people swear by it. It's good to have options of DAWs though. One thing I've loved about my PT experiment is that I imported a PT session that was about 15 years old and the new version had no trouble at all with it. I was shocked it was able to do that. Super cool that they keep up support like that. It was missing some plugins, but I can live with that. Thanks again! |
