Default yet again: uploads never finsh

My GT has been working fine for about a year now.

Since yesterday I canīt finish uploading a 1.7GB OMF Iīm trying to send.

My setup hasnīt changed at all. Iīve tried to restart the upload without luck.

My server is at an external computer-center hooked up directly to a backbone and very fast (no port-filtering, no FWs, no proxies, no content filtering).

My local line is VDSL (25Mbit down/5Mbit up, ping 40ms).

The client starts off with an estimate of 10minutes for the 1.7GB then goes up to 30 minutes. After a while to 1.5 Minutes remaining then back to 1 hour. But the progress bar goes anywhere from almost done to almost not visible to stall (candy-bar). Normally this upload would take 15 minutes over my line but now the client didnīt even upload the file over night.

FTP at the same time is reliable and very fast.

Since it has worked for almost a year non-stop I have no idea what I could change to get it back to work.

Has someone seen this? Is the central site down again like a few months ago?

My other clients complain about the same thing. They are all over the place so it canīt be my uplink.

Weird thing is that sometimes the speedbar doesnīt show ANY "LED" at all (not even red) but the bar keeps showing.

Thanks,

Frank.

UPDATE: Just tried a 10MB-File. Same thing. I restarted the server. After that all seemed normal. Realistic remain times but then after 2 minutes the problem came back. (1minute remaining for something that should take 15minutes but then never finishes).

Frank - you may want to contact Aspera directly. They're here relatively often, but you'll get a faster response using their support system.

Thanks for chiming in.
Iīm aware of that but I havenīt got a $upport-plan so I thought Iīd check the "public-domain" support of other users first. Last time Iīve had a problem like this was when the digi central site was down.

Update:

After testing Iīve found that downloading from the server is fine only uploading shows the described weirdness.

Iīve tested this from various locations (even different cities via clients).

ISP says on their side nothing has changed and is fully functional.

Update:

ISP has confirmed that there is no content-filtering, no bandwidth limiting and all required ports are open.

Iīm checking for a hardware faliure but I have no idea how that would lead to problems with uploads only.

There's plenty of drive space? Did you do a complete hard reboot? Check and reseat (or replace) ethernet cables?

It's definitely a strange problem. What happens if you uncheck 'Optimize for Internet Delivery' in the upload options?

It turned out that the logs of the server report that the en0-port constantly goes up and down.

Iīm now checking what the cause is. Could be either that the ethernet-port went belly up or the cable is faulty or the switch-port or a combination of that.

ISP says itīs highly unlikely the cable/switch-port but I have asked them to change cable and/or switch-port before I go there to pick up the unit if that doesnīt help.

Itīs similar to this:

What do the lights on the back of the DD Server show (if you can get at them)?

At least it seems you're on the right track toward a fix...!

After bringing the server back home the issue boils down to the en0 interface constantly flaping on and off every 3-4 seconds wich explains the huge lost package rate (70-80%) and hangs I was seeing
Iīve changed cables switches etc. without success.

Chris Markle has been great finding this. Iīve found a couple of posts on linux forums mentioning the same thing but since Iīm no linux expert (although this case might turn me into one shortly ) I have no idea if this is hardware related or not.

Kudos to Chris for the great help so far.

I just hope the box isnīt fried since I donīt have another 10000$ lying around.

But as we say here:

Hope is the last thing that dies.

Frank.

Just to complete the thread:

Although the issue has not been solved a work-around has been found. The port flaping only happens when connected to a gigabit-switch so Iīve hooked up the server via a fast-ethernet-switch wich isnīt an issue since the machine is located in a remote site anyway.
All works fine again.
Why this started out of the blue is unknown. Could be the hardware, could be something else.

A big thank you to Chris from Aspera!

Frank.
