Default Jam Sync Pro Tools with Camera

Hello,

I do a lot of film shoots and post work, but all my audio and video are recorded separate. I record all audio straight into Pro Tools through my mixer, instead of going into the camera or a separate recorder.

I can a Time Code Systems UltraSync for Timecode jamming between multiple cameras (I also use this for my field recorder when on location.) This way everything has timecode sync.

My question is can Pro Tools be jammed sync to a master timecode generator? This would make things much easier in post. I can jam sync the cameras, but not sure if i can do that to Pro Tools as well.

Thanks so much for the help!!

Yes, look into Lockstep and have it send MTC to your Pro Tools.

Pretend Final Cut is your master timecode generator and follow the same steps for Pro Tools and Lockstep.

Check this video out
(essentially starts at 2:30)

Will this work with a physical/hardware timecode generator? Or do I have to create an LTC in Premiere, for example?

We use 2 Canon C300 cameras and a Time Code Systems UltraSync to jam the cameras, and i just want to make sure the audio (pro tools) is syncing with the cameras as we film.

Thanks so much!

You just need to find a way to get the LTC output into your computer's audio input. Something like THIS should work by hooking up a BNC cable to the UltraSync's LTC out (if I understand the UltraSync hookups well enough).

Awesome!!

I'm ordering the adapter and one it gets here i will test this out. So basically, I can hook up the BNC to TRS adapter to my mixer and essentially record the timecode as a track in Pro Tools?

Is that right?

Almost! :)

You won't need to record the timecode into Pro Tools. Lockstep is the middle-man. Lockstep will take the audio timecode that you feed into your computer and convert it to MIDI timecode. You set the MTC path in Lockstep. Once you set the MTC Reader within Pro Tools to that MTC path (seen at 3:33 in the reference video), and put Pro Tools "Online", Pro Tools will chase the LTC timecode. Record your audio like you normally would, the LTC will just move your Pro Tools like a player piano. Good luck! Test it out before your next shoot and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
