Sticky shed.... it occurs to many tapes that are older, made in the late 70s early 80s... causes the emulsion to shed off the tapes...
here is a thread I wrote on another forum:

so could someone teach me why, how and when you would bake tapes??

When tapes are stored for an extented period of time ( depends on temp. & humidity ) they will " stick "

One of the solution is ...baking. Results may vary, depending on age of tape, back coating...etc
Try searching for "tape restoration" if you're really interested.

cheers,

Hey Kev. I'm sure you are talking about the infamous Mitch! Yea he was our drummer in the mid-80's with C. Roxity. We had David Patterson with us (now with Shawn Mullins) and Kevin Andrews-bass. After Mitch I had Mike Henton with C. Rocity for a couple of years, then Johnny Boerema for awhile then I started GroundZero around 1990 with Johnny. You might know those guys too. Anyway, let's get together soon and mix those 1/2 tapes to PT!

Mike

yea... ole' Mitch

It sure is a small world. I saw C. Rocity back then... can't remember which place though it seems like it was in L5P or somewhere on Ponce...the Celeberity Club?

well I got us off topic! as usual

Funny how this thread has suddenly risen from the dead, just as I got my trusty old steam powered Fostex E16 back from a service.

Had the recording heads relapped (recaped In the US?) as well and the machine sounds as good as new, the serviceman mentioned that they did cost up to £4500 brand new in the early '90's!

I am actually looking out for a Tascam/Fostex 1" 24 track but there is a shortage on the secondhand market & also have been warned that many old machines of this type will be very worn out by now. The prices are going up over here in England & the old reel to reel machines are in more demand than the ADAT's that were supposed to replace them.

Anyone considering buying an old analog multitrack should get it checked over by an expert before they hand over any cash.

Cheers JK
