Saying good bye to an old friend
It is with sadness that I am retiring my Glyph 050 7500 rpm hard drive today. Its so old I am not sure when I got it.It has work flawlessly for over 12 years. Why you ask? I just got a Samsung T5 SSD. I ran the Blackmagic speed test. The glyph firewire 400 drive did about 18 read and 15 write. The Samsung T5 (direct to my TB3 port- uses USB 3.1 gen 2) was 540 read and 290 to 490 write.
My internal iMac Pro drive is 2476 read and 3030 write (i think because it pegs the meter on blackmagic) No if I can just swing a TB interface :)

Re: Saying good bye to an old friend
Yea, I'm retiring my remaining WD Black drives in favor of large Samsung SSDs. But rather than sayin' goodbye, they'll make adequate backup drives.

Re: Saying good bye to an old friend
Having been burned a few times now I don't trust any mechanical drive more than 3 years old.

lol I just did the same thing and upgraded to Glyph SSD. Mine was 6 years old!! Very very fortunate to have had that consistency.

Re: Saying good bye to an old friend
I remember it being being very expensive at the time but Glyph just had a good reputation. It would have some fan noise when it booted but afterward it settled in and would not be bad at all. I remember leaving in on for weeks at a time because it was virtually silent and I would not notice it on.

Re: Saying good bye to an old friend
I have a dead Glyph from ca. 2000 that died a couple of years ago . I still have it in the forlorn hope I can get one of those forensic chappies to pull all the files off of it. Someday. sigh

I haven't tried Test Disk (for Windows, Mac and Linux) Recover Data from A Dead Hard drive [FREE!] https://youtu.be/maR47QBgVwY Or, you could download a Trial version of Seagate File Recovery for Windows / Mac https://www.seagate.com/au/en/servic...very-software/ If you don't feel comfortable tackling this yourself, there's https://www.seagate.com/au/en/servic...-lab-recovery/ “If we can’t retrieve it, you don’t pay” I'm interested to know what our fellow DUC Members use for Data Recovery – both recommended and NOT-recommended, please!

Re: Saying good bye to an old friend
Totally understandable.
My wife has a habit of leaving “Exponential Growth on the Back Burner” stickers around the house, whilst muttering “a stitch in time ….” in the loudest voice possible for a “mutter” ….
