I' running a G4 with an hd3 system. Is this compatible if I upgrade to a mac pro or do you need the express cards? If so is there any way around it? thanks

What G4 do you have? How much Ram? What interface are you using, the 192?
More info would help us help you!

Well, I'll save you some time... ALL G4 Desktops are regular PCI slots and ALL Mac Pro's are PCIe slots, so yes, you will definitely have to do a "cross-grade"... better get your lube ready!

An PCIe-PCI expansion chassis would allow you to get the new Mac and keep the HD3 PCI cards. I guess that's what I'm thinking about sometime in the future.
