Default How to avoid using the 001\'s mic pre\'s?

If I run a signal from the directs out of my Mackie into the mic/line inputs of the 001 with the -26db pad depressed, thereby making it a line input, will I have completely avoided the 001's mic pre's? Or will there still be a trace of distortion in this signal path?

You're still dealing with their converters. While the Digi001 is a great value, the converters and pre-amps are nothing special. One of my customers is a writer in Nashville and uses a Digi001 with a Neuman U87 for putting his tracks down. He was very unhappy with the sound. I recommended to him to get a Grace 101 for an affordable but very clean mic-pre. The problem is what I originally suspected and that was headroom. So the best option was to get the Apogee Rosetta to bypass the Digi001 converters altogether. While an expensive upgrade, it also makes a night and day difference in audio quality!

How can you bypass the Digi's converters? If your analog signal is going into the Apogee, converted to digital, and then input to the Digi's Line#3 input on the back (for example), isn't the Digi re-converting the signal again, or is the converted (now) digital signal from the Apogee going in direct, untouched by the Digi?

For what you pay for I think the mic pre's are good, not great but what do you expect for $1,600 (Canadian).

Xterling,

When using the Apogee convertor, the digital output connects to the the SPDIF inputs. Therefore bypassing the 001's ADC's.
In addition, the clock from the Apogee is better than the 001. Even if you had to use the 001's ADC's, by connecting the Apogee's SDPIF to the 001 and setting PTLE to SPDIF sync, you'll find that the sound tromendously improves. Less "jitter".
Hope this helps.

Or you can use an outboard effect with good converters..I use my own lexicon mpx 500..put it into bypass and use its spdif outs into the Digi OO1 spdif in's..
