Default Fav Surround music mixes?

Anyone checked out surround enough to have any "reference" releases?

I don't have a DVD-A/SACD player yet (and I'm a little concerned about the future of either format-but I suppose that's a subject for another thread). So DVD releases would be helpful.

Thanks

Tim

DVD - Peter Gabriel's "Play the Videos" is certainly interesting.

SACD - Dark Side of the Moon
DVD-A - Steely Dan "Gaucho"

Anyone heard the Fragile remix?

Geez is my age showing or what

Greg Penny's restoration and surround remixes/remasters of Elton John's Yellow Brick Road.

Absolutely astounding.

It's not DVD-Music so much, but it is a 5.1 mix on a live concert, and I highly recommend you check it out! Get the Elton John DVD at the Royal Opera House. I get the chills every time I listen to it! Also, the Dream Theater Metropolis 2000: SCENES FROM NEW YORK DVD is pretty awesome also! Different music, different feel, but still cool.

Nine Inch Nails has a few good ones. Umm Eagles Hell Freezes Over has a few good tracks on it as well.

The Police... Every Breath You Take (DTS)

I've always liked the more rockin' Police songs in the past but the depth and layering of this album rocks in 5.1

de do do do, de da da da is incredible. And I hate that song!

Much as I wanted to enjoy this (it's one of my favorite albums of the genre/period) it's pretty weak. Too much reverb, not enough power in important parts, especially the title cut. Also there are a lot of "I've never heard that before" in a not good way - way too prominent handclaps, guitar parts.
Unlike DSOTM which benefits from the surround treatment, this one does not. Perhaps because it's a Rhino Records release and doesn't seem to have any input from the band.

my 2 cents . . .

Try Steely Dan's "Everything Must Go". Typical Steely Dan production, and you get options: DTS, Dolby Digital, or DVD-A.

Also, try:
Beachboys - "Pet Sounds" (Cool remix of an album that was originally mono)
Beck - "Sea Change"
Elton John - "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
Jonatha Brooke - "Steady Pull"

...but avoid like the plauge...
Living Colour - "Collidescope" (I like the album, but the 5.1 is nothing more than some verb in the surrounds...)

Just my 2 cents!

Jim Longo has great taste and no its not an age thing...

SACD DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
DTS STEELEY DAN GAUCHO
DVD A BECK SEA CHANGE
DVD V Alison Krauss Union Station Live

The dark side of the moon 30th anniversary is one of the best multi-channel music mixes I have ever heard. In fact its so good its overwhelming...

Alison Krauss Live is one of the best live performaces with some of the most amazing musicians playing some of the best gear you can get...
