Default Telephone Voice Effect

I'm feeling lazy today. Is there a telephone voice effect in any of the common plug ins, or do I have to make my own?

I haven't had the need to do this since I picked up PT.

Waves Q10 has a preset. I thought this went out of style after every pop song used it a couple of years ago.

Maybe it's now retro, and coming back around for the second or third time.

The funny thing is that today's telephones are sounding increasingly more hi-fi with every passing year. The frequency band restricted, highly compressed, somewhat distorted telephone sound is not really part of the world that we live in.

Talking into a styrofoam cup also works. That's how they do it on the Prairie Home Companion. The foam cup has the additional benefit of no WUP charge.

the lexicon mpx1 has a great phone effect preset.

yes, Q10 does too. but any eq will do. and lots of compression. maybe even a little dirt, like from a lofi, or vinyl plug.

the other thing is to run it through the phone. it is easy enough to make a phone interface. or, if you own one to patch in clients, then use that. that's what i do now.

Here's my formula ... I had fun

I recorded my co-worker's voice through the speakerphone into PT.

I then ran a EA Firium match on the curve.

I now use that curve with a bit of iZotope Vinyl behind it.

This is one of the few times that EQ matching has truly worked to my advantage ... clients have actually commented on the sound (favorably).

Cheers,

Actually I see from Waves' website that the FC1 foam cup plugin is now available...... Man it's expensive....

I've never encountered a convincing way to fake the sound imparted by telephone transmission. My solution? Use a telephone. Radio Shack sells an inexpensive (shocking, I know) phone recording (ahem) system* which works like a charm**. Seriously.

* Cheapo mic with suction cup.

** Probably due to the hyper-cardioid suction pattern.

IHTH.
