Default Is the Avid IO fan quieter than the 192 fan?

With two 192s the fan noise is a distraction. I'm considering an Avid IO, hoping that the fans are quieter.

It is a bit quieter, but I still have mine in a machine room. Would not want to track with it in close proximity to any mice.

I've heard the new fans are LOUDER than the old ones, so maybe there is no difference as one person is saying this and another person is saying that.

Machine room is naturally the safest place for those fans, but there are other alternatives. ISO-boxes for example are widely used if you want to keep your gear very near. Those are however costly. Then again you could let an electrical engineer open you your box and replace the stock fan with super-quiet 3rd party fans. That however voids warranty but it can be done anyway. Fans are not high tech, they are just high annoyance.

I would very much love a fan-less interface, but apparently something in the interface generates too much heat so fan is necessary for 24/7 operation.

That said; I remember that back in the 888 days, we used to snap the fans away from them altogether. Never had heat problems. Would not recommend that solution to you, but I'm just saying that there are different solutions.

If anything, I'd say the HD I/Os are louder. I can't make a back to back comparison, but from what I remember, the 192s weren't that loud.

I like the HD i/o sound and I like the 192 but I was gutted when I got my HD i/o and it was at best no improvement and possibly actually worse than my old 192.

In truth it upsets me greatly that for the sake of a few quid they couldn't be arsed to stick a quieter fan in it.

It really grinds my gears. Apart from that I love my HD IO.......but Avid COME ON!!!

Anyone know if there's an easy swap out for it?

Actually, I'm looking into this right now.
I found this thread, that sounds promising:

Just ordered the parts but I don't know, if I'll have the guts to go through with it...

Edit: Attatched is a picture of the insides I found over at Gearslutz.

I swapped out my 192 I/Os for HD I/Os, and one of the first things I noticed was how much louder the HD I/O fans are.

Keep in mind that the fans are multi-speed, depending on the heat of the units. Perhaps the HD I/Os naturally run hotter and need a higher fan speed. I don't know the reason. However, my observation is that the HD I/Os are louder, in the same studio and same rack, when compared to the 192 I/Os.

Relax, it'll go just fine if the new fan is of correct size. Just take a note (photo) of how the connector is aligned and stick the new one back the same way.

AFAIK you have to pull off the connector from the cable of the old fan, and put it on the cable of the new fan, since the HD I/Os connector is 4pin as opposed to the new fan's which is 3pin. (or you splice the cables, same thing)

Question - are the cores always color coded the same way? So replacing red with red and black with black - no possibility of wrongdoing here?

The fan dilemma is a big design flaw
in the otherwise stellar new avid converters.
Unfortunatelly they seem to have mainly studios with machine rooms
in their focus and not the recording musician.

Yesterday I had an omni at my place and the fan noise was so annoying
that it was a dealbreaker.
The omni fan has also a noticable tonal component in itself,
which cuts through on all recordings in the same room.

HD I\O is not as bad as the omni and has only the usual fan sound.
I will modify it non the less.

Avid please would you consider in the next revision
that less and less studios have machine rooms
and converters often times are next to microphones.
So would you please either include quiet fans
or do designs without fans
like UAD do with their apollos.

You dont want to track with gml pres and dpa mics
when you can hear a fan over all your tracks.....thanks !
