Default Need Loop Recommendations

Hey all. Didn't see a forum specific to loop-based production so I'll chance it here.

I'm not much of a loop user, but more and more I'm finding singer/songwriter types who want simple percussion loops to use as click tracks. I have a very limited collection and so have usually just programmed something from my many drum and percussion libraries, but I'd really like to have an instant collection that we can quickly rifle through until they hear something they like. I'm talking loops that use various ethnic instruments but without sounding overtly ethnic to the degree they'll influence the playing. So, of course, shakers, cajon, djembe, dumbek, congas, frame drums, etc., but playing minimalist beats. Does such a beast of a (Pro Tools and Logic compatible) loop library exist?

Are you now talking about a Mac compatible solution? I ask because your sig file says you're on a Windows system.

You may want to step out of the PT/Logic world if you're on Windoze and think about Sony Acid for what you're looking for. Now I'll grant that Sony hasn't done much with development and Acid lately but it might be worth a look. Besides you could bring in the Sony stuff via Rewire.

I'm dual-platform but I do most of my Pro Tools work on PC. Logic is great when I'm the principle arranger, but when I'm just the recordist working with live musicians, it would be nice to stay exclusively within PT. So variety, speed and simplicity is what I'm after in a click loop library. Audition, import (with tempo adjusted), done.

If it was me, I would grab EZDrummer, open the latin perc setup, and browse thru the included midi beats until the musicians were happy. I'm shure much quicker than browsing audio loops. It's $149, though, but perhaps you already have a similar plugin that can do the job?

Hmm, interesting idea. While the Latin set is one of the few I don't own, I have and use EZ Drummer 2 all the time. But I've always used it to program and have never used any of the included beats. Thanks, worth looking at.

Samplephonics, Big Fish Audio, and Loopmasters are the first place I go when I'm looking for loops.

Depends how much you're willing to spend and what quality.
For quality, Heavyocity Master Sessions ethnic drum ensembles (which I think can run in the Kontakt free version)

or Transfuser has some ethnic perc too.

I'll check these out. Cool ethnic percussion loops aren't in short supply, but simple ones are. I did find a percussion library from Drums On Demand that is very close to what I was looking for. But there seems to be a little bit of a hole here, and if I still had the energy of my youth, I'd be sorely tempted to create my own library.

Thanks for the suggestion. Stylus is a little bit overkill for what I need. I did find a percussion loop library in the right vein from Drums On Demand. It's a bit limited in its selection, but does include a number of very simple individual instrument loops that can easily be combined. I also played around with EZ Drummer 2's loop functions a bit, and will definitely pick up the Latin set next time it's on sale. Between those two options I'll have a good start, but seeing that there really isn't much to choose from, I hope to create a small custom library this year. Being married to a hot percussionist has its advantages...
