Default processors

i'm planning on building a pc dedicated to my digi 001, but i have a question. almost every post i've seen says athlon kicks the p3's butt. however when i emailed digi, they said the best performance comes from a p3/intel chipset-bases motherboard? now i'm really confused. p3 or amd? which actually runs better with fewer bugs? thank you.

Get the athlon xp cpu over the P3, trust me. Do a search for PT Performance and see the results. Good Luck!

We have both the P3 850Mhz and and Athlon 1.46Ghz T-bird. There is no comparison. The Athlon really does kick butt over the P3 and is error free, where the P3 locks up almost every time we use heavy plugins.
I recommend the A7V266E motherboard with 512 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM from www.crucial.com and an Athlon XP 1.8 or 1.9 processor. You will get about 70-80% better performance.
Good luck.

i know they said there is no support for an amd chipset other than via 133a, but you recommend the new 266 right? it would make since, i mean newer should be better. andy reason why you think they said p3 was better? thanks.

Digi is a very Mac focused company. I'll guarantee that they haven't tried out these new Athlon motherboards with the XP processors, or they would be putting more focus on the PC platform. When you can get 70-80% more performance out of a computer at over half the cost of a Mac, that would wake most software companies up. Steinberg is working with AMD on optimizing their software and hardware for the Athlon processor because they know what the future holds. Just a thought.

Digi isn't sayign it doesn't work, just that they aren't spending time supporting it. Basically, they're playing it careful.

The posts you see here are real. There are lots of us running Athlon's very happily. Read the PT Performance thread carefully, buy an Athlon, and then make music.

Cheers,
Mark

I use the gigabyte ga7dxr. some guys here swear by the new asus boards. you might want to get one of the faster xp processors, they are not that more expensive than the xp1600.

(from http://www.pricewatch.com)
$180 - Athlon XP 1800
$135 - Athlon XP 1700
$114 - Athlon XP 1600

XP Processor with DDR main memory. A great combination. I'm partial to Asus because I know their BIOS which makes it easy for me to set things up. Gigabyte may be just as easy.
