Default C600 stops working frequently

My Fast Track C600 behaves strangely since I bought it. Every now and then it simply stops working. Now sound output, but all application that rely on sound - audio players, video player, YouTube in a browser, stop playing (they continue to work, buffering data, but that's all). The only solution seemed to be unplugging the interface and plugging it back which was bringing everything back to normal.

Unfortunately hot-plugging also lead to frequent system crashes so I looked for another workaround which work for me now - I simply right click on the volume icon in the tray and activate playback devices list. Then I simply disable C600 and enable it again to get everything working again.

I have no idea what can be a problem - is it my hardware/software combination (Windows 7 Ultimate, btw), or my is my unit defective?

Needles to say, that drivers updates didn't change anything. Any ideas?

Can you post your full system specs? Have you gone through the Optimization Guide, specifically the part about disabling any power saving?

Personally, I don't run my system sounds through my interface as it causes more headaches than it is worth.

Indeed^^^ the 2 things I would do are;
#1-set Windows to use the onboard audio output
#2-make sure Power Management is OFF on all USB ports(called USB Root Hub in Device Manager.
Other things to consider; if you are connected to a USB3 port, try a USB2 port. Post a Sandra report(see the Help us Help You link near the top of the page) so folks can look over the system hardware for any possible incompatible parts

I will try to use onboard audio but usually they are very noisy and I try to avoid them as much as possible. And 90% of my C600 usage is listening to system sounds.

I did all optimization steps described in the attached documents long time ago - no improvement since.

Default Re: C600 stops working frequently

Looks like a rather old and under-powered computer, with a questionable chipset(incompatible chipsets can give lousy performance, or just not work at all). I don't recall ever seeing the X38 listed on any list of approved or working systems with Pro Tools

One added benefit of a newer system is, many have SPDIF outputs for the onboard audio. I feed mine to the optical SPDIF input of a Presonus Central Station and all my non-Pro Tools audio sounds just as good as PT audio thru my HD IO interface.

Default Re: C600 stops working frequently

But I'm not complaining about Pro Tools performance, as I'm not using PT at all.

I'm using my C600 with all kinds of audio software and "ordinary" software and the problems are related to the interface not the software.

This machine is old but is good enough for what I do, thank you very much. The DAW I use works quite fine on this setup. Everything else as well.

Of course I would be glad to replace it, but it's much easier (cheaper) to buy a different interface (from different manufacturer next time) than to replace the whole machine at this moment.

I see. I have no other ideas to offer, short of a better interface or a driver update. Maybe as a last resort, try ASIO4ALL.
