Fast Track Ultra 8R channels going bad over time
I acquired an M-Audio Fast Track 8R last year and about three or four months ago, channel 5 started always blinking. I checked the signal in a DAW and its nothing but harsh static. I took the unit all around the house trying to plug it into different circuits all with the same result, the same constant static. If i do the -20db knob pull it doesn't change, but if I turn the knob the static signal responds to that.
Well today channel 7 went bad as well. The static is not as constant but sounds more like frequent popping. Same symptoms; can't get it to go away UNLESS i use the SPIDF output. Channel 7 has NO static if it's going through the SPIDF input (bypassing all analog circuitry). I have no idea where to even start. Any ideas?

Re: Fast Track Ultra 8R channels going bad over time
It sounds like you have pre's going. Although the SPDIF output is a bit puzzling..
You can try contacting an Avid repair centre: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/FAQ/en210711. Depending on the cost of repair and shipping, you might want to weigh purchasing a new interface. Joel

Re: Fast Track Ultra 8R channels going bad over time
Thanks Joel. i apologize, i checked the "my posts" page over the past two days, but was never notified that someone replied to this thread.
And i agree, the spidf thing is confusing because those inputs are not supposed to bypass the preamps. So i guess i'll just have to deal with it. Thanks

bump? anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? maybe go in and do some surgery and bypass the preamps?

Re: Fast Track Ultra 8R channels going bad over time
Personally, I would use it as an excuse to upgrade. If you have a firewire port, a used 003R with a Behringer ADA8200 would be $500 or less, gets you 12 mic preamps, lower latency and would sound as good if not better Just thinking out loud
